In the previous blogpost I told you everything about Verona, today Venice is up. My parents and I were staying in Salò (Lake Garda). Normally we visit cities by car but this time we chose to go by train because this was advised to us. We rode about one hour to Desenzano and to take a pre-ordered train. The train ride took about another 1,5h. It was very comfortable though with good airco and spacious seats. We also took the train back on a pre-fixed hour. Because of that we only had 5 hours in Venice which was way too less.
Finding the way from the train station to Piazza San Marco was not that hard since there were signposts everywhere. The other way around was another story. The route to San Marco made you pass by some gorgeous views although I think you can find those views pretty much everywhere in Venice ;-) I was totally mesmerized by the gondolas, too bad my parents didn't want to engage in this activity. Who wants to go back with me to Venice to ride a gondola?
I have to admit that the closer we got to the Piazza San Marco, the more I started to panic. When I was in Venice as a child, there were so many pigeons. Thumbs up to Venice for cleaning the square up. I have a huge fear for birds for those who didn't know yet. The San Marco basilica is gorgeous but unfortunately we didn't have time to enter. Another reason to go back to Venice I guess.
Right behind Piazza San Marco a lot of luxury brands such as Gucci, Chanel, Dior,... have a flagship store. These flagship stores are quite big in comparison to the ones in Rome, I think only Milan does better. In this area we also had lunch at the Hardrock Café. Being mid-way through our Italian holiday, I craved non-Italian food. So the change brought on by the hamburgers of the Hardrock Café was very welcome.
Afterwards we shopped a bit in the other streets with little boutiques. All too soon it was time to take the train back to Desenzano. I can really advise a citytrip to Venice but you will need at least two days to get everything done. Taking the train was a very comfortable experience, too bad about the pre-fixed hours.
Q: Have you ever been to Venice? Did you like visiting Venice?
