Afgelopen weekend vertoefde ik het pittoreske
Normandië om er de start van de
Tour de France mee te pikken. Als je in zo een mooie streek vertoeft, heb je natuurlijk voor meer dan alleen maar wielrenners oog. Door mijn interesse in geschiedenis en dan zeker de
wereldoorlogen stond Normandië al lang op mijn wensenlijstje en één ding weet ik zeker: hier kom ik zeker terug naartoe.
Elke bocht die je neemt, geeft weer een
prachtig uitzicht weer maar het landschap draagt ook nog zware sporen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Voor de echte liefhebbers zijn er letterlijk talloze museums om te bezoeken over dit onderwerp. Helaas hadden wij niet zoveel tijd maar vandaag toon ik jullie wat ik wel heb kunnen bezichtigen.
Last weekend I stayed in picturesque Normandy to attend the start of the Tour de France. If you are in a gorgeous region like this, you of course haven't only eyes for the riders. Normandy was one of those places that had been on my wishlist like forever because of my huge interest in history and definitely the World Wars and one thing I know for sure: I'll be back!
Each corner you turn, reveals another gorgeous view and the landscape still bares visible traces of the second World War. There are literally countless museums to visit about this subject. Unfortunately we didn't have that much spare time but in this blogpost I'll show you what we visited.
Etretat
Onze eerste stop was het kleine dorpje Etretat. Op zich is hier niet zoveel te zien maar wel ideaal om even op
rust te komen. Of in ons geval om rustig wakker te worden na een hele nacht geslapen te hebben in de auto. Waarom is deze plaats nu bekend vraag je je misschien af? Awel, dat komt door een krijtrots die lijkt op
een olifant die met zijn slurf in het water zit. Verder kan je er lekker gaan uiteten.
Our first stop was the small village Etretat. There's not much to experience but it's the perfect place to have a peaceful moment. Or in our case to quietly wake up after having slept in a car all night long. What is this place known for you might wonder!? Well, Etretat is known for a chalk rock which resembles an elephant which puts its snout into the water. There are also many delicious restaurants.
Pont de Normandie
Als je afreist naar Laag-Normandië rijd je automatisch over de Pont de Normandië. Op het moment van zijn inwijding in 1995 was dit de langste tuibrug die vrije doorvaart mogelijk maakt. Je voelt je eventjes als een kind in een pretpark.
If you travel to low Normandy you will definitely have to cross Pont de Normandie. On the moment of its inauguration in 1995 it was the longest rope bridge which allows free passage. You feel like a child in an amusement park.
Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial
Het Amerikaans kerkhof in Normandië is één van de meest indrukwekkende dingen die ik ooit heb gezien. Op zo een moment besef je pas hoe zinloos oorlog is en hoe hoog de dodentol wel niet is. Rijen en rijen witte kruisjes liggen verspreidt over het gras en zijn een stille herinnering aan de gesneuvelde soldaten. Verder is er ook een kapel waar je een gebed kan doen en een monument. Normaal kan je ook Ohama Beach bezoeken waarop een landing van D-Day heeft plaats gevonden. Helaas was dit omwille van veiligheidsredenen afgesloten toen ik er was.
The American cemetery in Normandy is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen. During moments like these you realise how pointless war is and how high the death toll was. Row after row of white crosses are spread over the grass and are a silent memory of the perished soldiers. Furthermore there's a chapel in which you can pray and a memorial. Normally you can also visit Omaha Beach on which D-Day took place but unfortunately this wasn't accessible due to security measures.
Pointe du Hoc
Pointe du Hoc is gelegen op een klif langs de Normandische kust. Deze plaats werd door de Duitsers bezet met een strook van 155 meter aan kanonnen en bunkers. Op 6 juni 1944 tijdens de landing in Normandië was dit de eerste plaats die de geallieerden veroverden. Delen van bunkers, kraters van bommen,... zijn bewaard gebleven op Pointe du Hoc.
Pointe du Hoc is situated on a cliff at the Normandic coast. This place was occupied by the Germans with a stripe of canons and bunkers. On 6th June 1944 during the landing in Normandy, Pointe du Hoc was the first place to be recaptured with the allies. Parts of bunkers, craters of bombs are still visible at Pointe du Hoc.
Sainte-Mère-Eglise
Sainte-Mère-Église werd op 6 juni 1944 bevrijd door luchtlandingsdivisies van de 82ste divisie, en was de eerste bevrijde stad van de invasie. Dit wordt de dag van vandaag herinnerd door een pop met parachute die aan de kerktoren hangt en een museum gewijd aan de parachutisten.
Sainte-Mère-Eglise was freed on 6th June 1944 by the air landing division of the 82e division and it was the first freed city of the invasion. Until this day this event is being commemorated with a doll of a parachutist which still hangs down the church tower and a museum is dedicated to parachutists.
