Sunday the 26th July I visited Paris (not taking Disneyland into account) for the first time. The occasion was watching the final stage of the Tour de France live. Cycling has been a passion of mine since 2001 and the Tour de France is the most exciting and important race of the year. At 7 A.M. our bus from the Zigeuner left in Diepenbeek and we arrived in Paris about 5 hours later. Of course we wanted to watch the race from the first row and doubted between a place on the Champs Elysées or at the Arc de Triomphe. Eventually we decided on watching the race from Arc de Triomphe because there were big screens on which we could watch the race when the racers where not passing us buy.
From 2 P.M. until 5 P.M it rained cats and dogs but we held on to our first row spot. When the racers finally arrived in Paris and did their 10 laps the sun finally came out and we were rewarded for our patience. I can't describe how magical it was to cheer on the best racers in the world like Chris Froome, Peter Sagan, André Greipel,... That moment the cyclists arrived on the local course they were cheered on because everyone has so much respect for these amazing athletes. It gave me goose bumps and I still look back on this day as one of the best days of my life.
NL: Zondag 26 juli bezocht ik Parijs (even Disneyland niet meetellend) voor de eerste keer. Dit was ter gelegenheid van de aankomst van de laatste etappe van de Tour de France. Wielrennen is een passie van mij sinds 2001 en de Tour de France is de spannendste en belangrijkste wedstrijd van het jaar. Om 7 h 's morgens vertrok onze bus van de Zigeuner in Diepenbeek en 5 uren laten kwamen we aan in Parijs. We wilden de race natuurlijk vanaf de eerste rij bekijken en twijfelden tussen een plaatsje op de Champs Elysées of aan de Arc de Triomphe. Uiteindelijk besloten we om ons te posteren aan de Arc de Triomphe omdat daar ook grote schermen waren waarop we de race konden bekijken wanneer de renners niet voorbij ons fietsten.
Van 14 u tot 17 u regenden het echt pijpenstelen maar we waren vast besloten om onze plaats op de eerste rij te behouden. Toen de renners eindelijk aankwamen in Paris en aan hun 10 plaatselijke rondjes begonnen, werden we eindelijk beloond voor ons geduld en kwam de zon uit. Ik kan echt niet beschrijven hoe magisch het is om de beste renners in de wereld aan te moedigen zoals Chris Froome, Peter Sagan, André Greipel,... Het moment dat de renners begonnen aan de rondjes, moedigden het voltallige publiek deze fantastische atleten ook erg aan. Het gaf mij kippenvel en kijk nog altijd terug op deze dag als één van de beste dagen van mijn leven.
